Center
Adjacent to the courthouse, the Public Safety Center houses the
law enforcement facility and the Monona County Civil Defense
Department. The surrounding counties, including Woodbury,
frequently use the jail for housing prisoners between transfers
and court appearances.

Onawa Volunteer
Fire Department
Onawa's fire department is located at Eighth and Diamond
streets. The firefighters receive periodic training on the latest
techniques and equipment used in fire fighting and emergency
services. The equipment is well stocked and in new or near new

Onawa Public Library
Built in the "Craftsman" style, this Carnegie library
was just completed a 2.6 million dollar addition that continued
the architectural theme. The Onawa Public
Library is centrally located and easily accessible to all
citizens.
The building contains two floors with a collection
of 30,000 volumes, a local history work area, a local history
research office and meeting rooms. The library offers access to
computer, video and microfilm equipment.

Onawa Community
Foundation
The Onawa Community Foundation was established to facilitate the
fund raising efforts for Onawa projects. The Foundation is also
available for individual endowments or bequests either designated
for a specific Onawa project or under the general discretion of
the Board of Directors.
Current projects under the Onawa Community Foundation include the
Onawa Community and Recreational Center, Monona County Veterans
Memorial, Onawa Public Library Expansion, Onawa Playground
Equipment, Early Childhood Development Center, Lewis & Clark
Interpretive Center, West Monona Community School District, Monona
County "Y", Onawa Housing, Downtown Beautification,
Commercial Building, and Ropes Park.

Transportation
Onawa's external transportation needs are served several
different ways.
- Highways
Onawa is served by Interstate Highway 29, connecting Sioux
Falls and Sioux City (30 miles north) with Omaha (58 miles
south) and Kansas City. Interstate 29 is a controlled access
facility tying into east/west Interstate 80 about 40 miles
south of Onawa, which connects to Des Moines. The community is
also served by conventional highways including old U.S. 75
(Iowa 475) paralleling Interstate 29 from Sioux City to
Council Bluffs, and Iowa 175, running east and west.
- Railroads
The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, a necessary rail line
to the interests of Iowa, passes through Onawa.
- Trucking
Local firms not only distribute agricultural products to
markets in Sioux City, Omaha, Council Bluffs and Des Moines,
but also provide transportation of all kinds of consumer
goods.
- Bus Lines/Regional Transit
Onawa participates in a federally funded rural transportation
system called Siouxland Transit and serves as a stop on the
route. The system is designed to serve the elderly and
handicapped who are unable to drive or otherwise secure
transportation. Passengers may go as far as Sioux City for
shopping, medical services and other reasons. The route is
linked to similar systems in Woodbury, Ida and Cherokee
counties. Greyhound Bus Line operates a daily schedule in
Onawa as well.
- Municipal Airport
The Onawa Municipal Airport (K36) is located 1 mile SW of
Onawa. Onawa’s airport has a 3,400 foot concrete runway
with a Unicom Radio and Instrument Landing System. Contact the

- Air Service
Additional air service is available within a short driving
distance from Onawa. Sioux City's municipal airport is 30
miles north of Onawa with flights available on United,
Northwest and TWA airlines. Omaha's Eppley Airport is 60 miles
south of Onawa with flights available on Delta, Northwest,
United, TWA and Southwest airlines. Rental cars are available
at both airports from Thrifty, Alamo, National, Sears, Avis
and Hertz.

Daycare
The Early Childhood Development Center is a non-profit
organization providing quality child care for children from two
weeks to twelve years of age. Programs are offered for infants,
toddlers and school-aged children. A drop-off program is also
available.
The Center is licensed by the Department of Human Services and is
connected to the elementary school. This facility houses daycare,
preschool, and Headstart programs, as well as before-and
after-school child-care. This project is the first of it's kind to
combine the efforts of the City, County, School District and the
three child-care entities.
