Lewis & Clark Festival
June 13, 14 & 15, 2008
Lewis & Clark State Park
(2 miles west of Onawa's I-29 interchange) |
As the Lewis & Clark Expedition traveled upriver in 1804,
they faced considerable challenges in just moving their boats upstream. The shifting
sandbars, dead tree snags, floating bogs and constantly changing swift currents all
combined to make their trip very dangerous and slow going. They soon found that their
attentiveness to river conditions and coordinated teamwork were critical to making
upstream progress.
On hand is the Keelboat display made by volunteers to the exact specifications Lewis & Clark and crew traveled in, only tools available at that time were used to build the full size model. Also available for viewing is a dugout canoe and another smaller expedition boat also made by volunteers using 1800's tools. The Lewis and Clark Festival and Keelboat have been featured in several TV documentaries the last few years.
