Form of Government
- The City of Onawa was incorporated as a community in 1859. The City is has a
Mayor-Council form of government with a Mayor and six council members. The Mayor is
elected every two years. Council members serve four-year terms, with four Ward positions
and two At-Large positions.

Election Information
- General city elections for Mayor and City Council are held the first Tuesday in November
of each odd year. Contact the City Clerk for more information.
City Office Hours
- Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
City Council Meetings
- Meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the City
Office.
Planning & Zoning Commission
- Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month, as necessary,
please contact the City Office for the time and place.
Parks & Recreation Board
- Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
at the Kiwanis Shelterhouse in Gaukel Park (north 12th Street).
